I think we might have one or two on the board whose parent was the original owner.

I'm a third owner, and although I can imagine paying in the neighborhood of $50k for a new car, I don't know that I ever would.

Seems to me that a lot of folks who could afford these cars new have long since moved on to something newer, safer, more up to date, etc. Thus leaving the real fun to us.

Unless i hit the lotto i dont think i can justify a new car purchase. There are so many well taken care of BMW's out there.with some diligence you can land yourself a great car

I bought it new in late 1994. It is an October 1993 production, so was probably one of the first 540s in the States. The stealer had it for a while and was happy to sell it. They made me a deal, $44,000 at 4.75%. It was tough paying the $948 per month for five years, but it was finally paid for. I think I'll keep it forever. I think the e-34 body style is probably the best one BMW has ever produced, and it goes like stink. I has 180,000 miles on the original Nikasil block, and neither the engine or tranny have never been opened. I keep it as my "garage queen" now, and drive it almost only on the track. I'm working my way through various mods. So far I've:

Replaced entire front and rear suspensions, to include urethane thrust arm bushings, new tie rods and ends, new trailing arms and control arms, H & R springs, Bilstein Sport shocks, Racing Dynamics anti-sway bars, new rear suspension body mount and trailing arm bushings, differential bushings, and pittman arms.

Put in a Racing Dynamics strut tower brace, K-Mac front camber plates, Dinan air intake tube, Conforti DME chip.

Rebuilt differential with 3.45:1 gearset and Quaiffe torque biasing unit.

Corvette Z-06 front and rear twin caliper floating calipers with larger (13") front and rear discs. I use Hawk HT-10 pads front and Blues on the rear.

Supersprint cat-back exhaust.

BBS 17 x 8.5 RK wheels with Kumho Victoracer 700 245/45-17 tires.

Current project: 1998 e-39 540i six speed conversion.

Next project: Engine rebuild (it doesn't need it) with steel sleeves, low compression pistons, reground cams, port and polish, headers, and a Lysholm-based twin-screw supercharger, with air-to-water intercoolers, larger injectors, and a custom intake manifold. I'll be looking to make between 500-600 horsepower at 15# of boost. I will obviopusly need to find someone to recalibrate the DME chip on a dynanmometer.

I'm the original owner of a 1991, 525ia. Calypso red/ Parchment leather.
Took delivery in Dec.1990. It now has 180,500 miles. I bought a 2002 525i with intentions of selling the '91. Now the '02 is the garage queen w/6900 miles and the '91 is my commuter car. I paid $33,000.00 for it in 1990. I feel it was one of the best investments I've ever made. I plan on giving it to my son in a couple of years as his first car. I can only hope he takes good care of it.(under my watchful eye).

I'm the 2nd owner of my '93 525i. I don't think I'll ever buy another new car. For $7,000 each (avg.) I can buy 7 or 8 cars like mine for the price of 1 new one. I bought mine just a year ago, the only thing I had to fix was a temp sender for the coolant guage...$40 installed. This car is better than many new cars I have seen, it has features that were way ahead of it's time, stuff that's common now on alot of cars. These cars can be expensive to maintain, but if treated properly and with a little luck, it's alot cheaper than buying ANY new car.

I'm considering buying another one so I don't get so attached to this one., That way way if something big goes wrong, I won't feel like I have to sink alot of money into it to keep it. I already did that with my last one. It's a long horror story that would make your stomach turn, it started when my EX wife filled the motor with water when a "low coolant" light came on...AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
