Well, first of all, my car is a 1993 525i. I bought an EAT chip from one of the members here and installed it/ I made sure that the numbers on the chip match up and that it is lined up correctly. When I turn the key, everything turns on normally, and the car cranks but doesnt start... what could the problem be?

Elecro Static Discharge? (Fried chip?) unless its not located properly, has a bent pin, is the wrong way around (or was put in incorrectly at some point and powered up), or its been incorrectly programmed or damaged from ESD (in transit).

idk, all of the pins are fine and i put it in correctly (the little notch is facing the same direction as on the stock chip). DME is also fine, because it starts flawlessly with a stock chip. Also, am I supposed to disconnect the battery to for a while before starting a car?

you shouldnt have to disconnect the battery, sounds like you got a bunk chip. I would see if They will give you a deal if you send the fried chip back to em. is there any warranty with these chips?? I just installed the same chip in my 93 525i and It works like a charm. trust me you need this chip so dont give up, see what tms return policy is.

meh, he probably didnt know it was defective, so I will not be so quick to discredit him or hurt his rep on these boards, therefore I will not reveal his sn. And yes, I'll pm Mark 1st thing tomorrow.

I like the way you think. It's nice to see in this day and age. And NO it wasn't me who sold him the chip!!!

The clue to why the OP is having trouble (EWS) might be in the thread you found.

I didn't realise that. I would assume the chip isn't defective.

well, I guess I'll either try to resell it or perhaps I'll talk to mark and see if I can maybe work out some sort of a deal with him.

If if came out of a car made after 1/95 it might not work on earlier models becasue of the ews security system. Mark had to work around the ews on the later 95s.

MIGHT BE? SRR2, you were being kind. This is hilarious...the man (Mark D) who wrote the program for this chip specifically states in the 7th post that:

I found a way to make the motor start as long as the EWS hardware is attached to the DME. (that means the EWS control box and antenna around the ignition switch must be present). The chip will not work if you install it in a car without this hardware.

The seller states that his car has a 7/95 build date...and the buyer has a 1993 525i. I guess if you don't really have a grasp as to what EWS is then... I'm sure you can resell the chip...just make sure you inform the buyer that the chip is for a BMW 525i with a build date from 1/95-up. Your chip is meant for cars equipped with EWS II.

Here's some info about EWS:

My post simply stated the might be a problem with the production date and ews.

Disconnecting the battery is always required when working with electronic components! Also, you must discharge yourself through grounding or use a grounding strap when handling any integrated circuit or you risk damage to the IC, especially programmable IC's.
