A couple of issues with a 520i Touring

I've recently bought a 1993 520i Touring Auto. I'm really pleased with it on the whole very nice practical car. There are just a couple of issues that I'm hoping someone can help with:

- The rear window demister doesn't work, the light comes on the switch when you press it but the elements don't seem to work

- My car has the 5 speed auto box which seems to be very slow to change up when its cold but is fine once its warmed up. I was going to check the fluid but can't see a dipstick to do so?

Also the wiring may have pinched off in the rear tailgate hinge on the left side of the car. You can inspect that by opening up the glass in the tailgate and looking near the hinge for two wires (brown and black) that can get pinched apart. The wires will be inside a black braided sheath
