A quickie. At the straight ahead position, wih the engine off, how much play is there in your steering wheel?

I'm getting about 1 to 1.5 inches and wondering if it's normal or too much?

tighten the nut behind the wheel first.

... then sit bolt upright and don't screw around or you'll lose the thread of this pointless post! :D

i have huge play too

i've tried tightening the nut above the steering gearbox but have to try it again
first few times it was too tight and the wheel wouldn't
return to center =\

Hmmm, maybe I'd better rephrase my question:

How much play should there be at the steering wheel with the engine off and all four wheels on the ground?

TIA.

Yes you gotta watch what you say around here or just get used to the humour. There'll be a little bit of play. Get onto www.bmwe34.net and see the info about adjusting the steering. It's all there except the part about the nut behind the wheel...:D

All jokes aside, you really should tighten the nut behind the wheel.

OK, I'll have another go :)

Assuming the big nut at the bottom of the column is well tight and the center link, the pitman arm, the track rod arms are all tight...

How much play should there be in the steering wheel with the engine off and the wheels straight ahead?

None or nearly none? That's how mine is.
