Need help with Trans Mod indicator but trans runs fine.

My 93 e36 auto just had the Trans Module light come ON and the trans drives fine...no 3rd gear mode. So, what does this really mean? Is the trans computer needing a reset or replacement or does the trans have a problem that isn't apparent yet but will be later?
How can I check this problem? Bentley did not mention much about it specifically.

need to get the code read to see whats pissing it off, not all codes trigger limp mode

How do I read the code? My Peake Eng Code reader will not so what can read it?
