This is the radio I want:

This is what I have:

Could it work? I don't mind having to pay a pro to do it, but can it be done?

TIA

You'll have to forgive me but is the top one a BMW unit? There should be no problem connecting up the new radio. You just need the power in and the speakers out. What's the difference between the top and the bottom (apart from the obvious)? You don't appear to be getting any more features.

Sorry, both are BMW.

The top one is newer (from a Z3), and has a large, dot-matrix display instead of a segmented LCD display.

Here's a better pic of the radio from the Z3. It's made by Alpine and called the C33. I'm also interested in the C43, which is the same but adds RDS to display station names, highter wattage, and a few other refinements.

I imagine I'll have to buy some adapter or pay someone to do some wiring. I'm
willing to do that, so long as it's possible.

I can't see any reason at all why it wouldn't work. If you've marked your wires in the dash from where you've disconnected the old radio it 'should' just slip right in. Get another opinion though. Good luck!

You should be able to make the radio work, but if you have the factory E34 CD changer, I don't think the newer radio will control it.

I don't have a changer. I'm more interested in using the casette with my iPod, or to get one of the iPod adapter kits that's compatible with this newer radio.

No, I'm just trying to brighten up my interior a bit with some newer tech.
