Im looking for a new bimmer in the 10k-15k range. I am looking at a few 540im and a few e36 M3s, both the 3.0 and the 3.2. I am young and im not too worried about ride qaulity, but mileage is a little bit of a concern, but considering iv been driving a ram 1500 and a caravan that isnt maintaned, anything will be an improvement. Im leaning more towards the M3 as I have a 325is that im building a track car out of and i like the coupe body alot, and a straight six will be easier to work on and im familiar with it. Any good reasons why I shouldnt, or any good sources of these cars would be appreciated, thanks.

If you already have a 3-series that you're building as a track car, there's no need for an M3.

Drive a 540i/6, then you will know why you want it. Also don't expect good mileage in city driving.

I was in the same boat for awhile, decided that since I was only 22 and not married that the insurance made it unrealistic to get my M3, at least now. I'll get one eventually, but I can't justify paying a ridiculous premium like that now. Might be something to think about.

540i/6 without a doubt.

540/6. I think we're biased tho as you're asking on a 5-series forum. :D
