The original aux electric fan in my 530i AT / E34 / M60 burns (literally because the fuse box is also melted) fuse # 25 - the power fuse going to feed the fan.

The dealer told me that there was once a recall on the problem and suggests me to replace the aux fan with the one from 528i / E39. It costs US$250 compared to US$500 something on the original part.

Is there anyone having similar experience (with burning fuse box) ? Will replacing with E39's solve the problem, or is there any other suggestion?

Thanks.

Likely that the fan motor is shot. It won't turn so it's pulling the full locked-rotor current. There are a few reports of prolonging its life by cleaning the motor and commutator, but I doubt that this does much more than delay the inevitable. It wouldn't be unusual to find that the low-speed resistor is also burned out. An ohmmeter check on that is OK to determine its condition.
