View Full Version : So you have a $500,000 supercar, but it isn't loud enough?

So you went to your local porsche dealer and waited a year for delivery of your 600 hp Carrera GT. You take it around the interstate and turnpike, a few track events, and come back to say "It's too quiet". Taking a look at the stock muffler - the size of a bathtub - you decide "Eh, I could do without this..."

So you drop the car off to AWE Tuning in Willow Grove, PA, and leave a blank check in the glovebox. 3 weeks and 100 screws later it looks like this:

AWE Tuning gave us a tour of their facility and Todd, the president, explained to us their entire operation. There are some more pictures on my site at http://www.blowneuroz.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=120

Oh dear.

I've been passed on the highway by a Carrera GT. I can tell you it is loud enough.

I do not, for the life of me, understand why anyone would think the Carrera GT somehow left the factory being less than perfect and in need of mods.

No pleasing some people, I guess.

I can tell you that I could still hear the GT's banshee wail after it was a good mile up the road ahead of me.

Well the guy is also getting an ECU reflash and some other work too! The ECU flash removes the limiter and adds power for a total of 670

Oh, good, because it's just so slow from the factory.

Walter Rohrl says the GT is the only car who's performance has ever scared him. If that's the case, then NOBODY ought to require more than the stock performance.

I mean, the guy's got a right to do whatever he wants, sure, but he can't seriously think that the GT is in any way wanting. Plus, he's gone and made his wonderful car street-illegal.

As an aside, when I first saw the pic I mistook the wing supports for F1-style vertical exhausts :D

Well considering who the driver is and his experience - I think if he desires more performance it's probably due ;) Yeah the wing supports confused me too. They actually had to take the wing off in order to get the hood fully off. Very odd.

I'm with jaylebo on this one. Porsche is very well known for having some of the most effecient exhaust systems on any vehicle. That is not the place to pick up any improvements. If you want loud, I think you just flat purchased the wrong vehicle. Seems that Porsche should show up and take their fine product back and pass it on to some more deserving Porschephile............

.....like ME!

Seriously though, what a waste. It looks like crap too.

Haha you apparently have never heard of AWE. They take forever, however, they are THE place to have your Porsche. They have 20 - 30 cars there at any one point. A $500,000 car isn't something you want to just rush into. With a V10 revving 8,000+ rpm, you kind of want to make sure you get everything insulated for vibration.

Customers drop their 996TT's off for a month, but when they come back they dyno 770 awhp. Sometimes things are worth the wait.

Ooooooh! When I eventually blow my M30 and jam a stick shift in, maybe I should put it down the back too...

Nope, they don't advertise in any of the Porsche mags (Panorama or Excellence). They obviously don't work on the older cars much because the don't show up in the 911S or 356 Registries.

I think I'd just leave the thing alone. The fellows at Weissach put plenty of thought into that exhaust and didn't have a budget to constrain them. I am sure they threw far more resources at its development than these guys can muster. Obviously that's the case or these guys would have it all sorted out, you'd pull in and have it intalled and out the door in a week or so. I don't think I would want to be paying them to do R&D work on my car.

Just my opinion.

Interesting pics though, thanks !

Here's a pic of what looks to be the original system:

They dont work on anything before 944's. They do advertise a lot.

Also, go to 6 Speed Online forums and say "AWE" and you'll see what I mean.

Awesome car. Stock or otherwise. If I were to own one, I would extend my garage into the living room and park this darn thing next to the couch!. Enjoy...

I'd get rid of the couch completely and watch TV from the driver's seat! :D

i must be missing something, the 'sheetwork' is heat shielding, the pipes are now straight out. does the driver have industrial deafness or is he looking to inflict similar on others..

That car is pure sex! I wish you had some sound clips, I can't even imagine.:D Even missing the bumper it is beautiful, the carbon fiber lateral member, the bumper supports with holes drilled for weight reduction, like they did on the ultra lightweight '67 911R. Just spectacular.

not a GT race video, but this driver is quite good at making the GT go a little sideways in the corners.

I regularly deal with people who you can give a brick of gold to who will complain it is to heavy.
When I ran the lot, I bought a early viper that a Charlotte native dropped 40k at a nascar garage ( DEI ) and the buyer whined about pickup. Twin turbos and 50k later it was okay. Did the twin turbo, custom cams and remap do the trick or the $50k bill?

My favorite part of the video is when someone says....

"it sounds like a really, really big race bike." The driver should have turned the car off, gotten out, and smacked him for being stupid!

WHAT DID YOU SAY OFFICER?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU, MY CAR IS TOO LOUD.

Anyone know the new performance numbers?

Last week, my brother and I saw a guy in my town driving one of those around . . . in the rain. I couldn't believe it.

My brother said, "Hmmm, that's interesting. I wonder what he keeps *inside* his garage when it rains."

"Oh no, it's raining. I hate to get my Veyron all muddy so I guess I'll drive the Carrera GT today."
