View Full Version : How do I find out if my car is ready for a keyless entry?

I have a 9/91 525, but its a 92 model year. I am not sure whether or not it will be ready for keyless entry. I am looking at this:

and says "This is a complete plug-n-play keyless entry system built for your pre-wired** E34 5-Series BMW (1992-1996)"

But I am not sure what's up or how to know for sure. Any help?

well you should have a prewired connector under the rear seat to the right of the battery, it might be tucked under some padding so dig around. black 12 pin connector, there is also a 1pin plug that is your hood pin. This should plug right in, if not the wiring is easy.

They sell junk and very little tech support. I'm still trying to get the rest of my refund. It didn't work in a '93 525i E34.

Nice write up from a cardomain site on keyless entry (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/739005/3) in a 95 525 touring. Pics and all. Maybe it will help.

if you don't have that unit you can wire into the lock/unlock wires in behind the left front sub woofer

having said that if you do it this way there are issues with deadbolting the door

I dont mean to steal your thread JonK, but while we are on the subject, would there be any way to install a keyless entry system on my car without a very costly or difficult retrofit?

I drew up wiring diagrams for it as well. I use the 2nd channel to deadbolt and rollup windows :D You just need some simple diodes to make sure current doesn't travel the wrong way.


having said that if you do it this way there are issues with deadbolting the door

You just need to pull the kick panel off like incantation said and open up the wiring loom in there......about 4 wires to crimp-on. The you have to connect the rest up to power and ignition lines under the steering wheel.


Well, thats out for me because i know next to nothing about electricity and wiring. Unless i can beg my brother to help me...

This is what I found to be wired to the door locks in my 92 525 ... Right next to the battery

Jon, personally, I'd use the Alpine factory system as shown on Q's cardomain page for keyless. A healthy percentage of the alpine systems were dealer installed.

All US cars are prewired and have some sort of green harness connector under the rear seat. Early cars have the IR box connector harness, which is physically different than the one used for the later Alpine unit, although the alpine box can be made to work with the early harness with a few splices. I don't know the exact date of production change (seen late production cars with the IR system), but your car should be plug and play. The boxes are frequently on eBay -- saw a nearly complete E32 setup go last week for less than $50 shipped). It's the only way to fly if you want OEM authenticity.

Has anyone tried the Stellar BMW45 Keyless Entry kit as advertized at Bav Auto? They claim it easily installs in the early 90 BMWs.

I picked one up but haven't installed it yet ... the instructions are BS, photocopy crap, most of which doesn't apply. You can find pdf's on stellars page ... I copied those and was still not impressed, you have to search everything to find relevant info.
I'm not sure when I will get to it.

Sorry oto kind of bring this back from the dead.

When i bought my 735 I didn't have keyless but am looking into it. I noticed htough that I go thte LED in the vents already and have this weird looking IR transmitter up by the sunroof controls. Does this mean its prewired and ready, just need a remote key and to reprogram then I should be good to go? Or what is this IR box for.

I screwed around with the connecter under the backseat. In order to got to the lock relay wires - you have to dig into some stuff. It was much easier to just tap into the wires at the kick panel. All in all - took about 30 minutes to solder diodes and wire it up.
