Well, that has been covered meanwhile, but maybe these pics help to use the nice 'tools' from your wife's (or girlfriend/mother etc) toolbox, namely the vacuum cleaner to vaccum all clean without removing to much
Usually the old filter might look like this after 15 months and about 10K miles

The black part at the lower bottom of the heat exchanger is what the previous owner tried to do with less suitable equipment to clean it. Bended fins.
