Hi, Does Anyone Know If The Head From A 1990 530i E34 Will Fit The Engine In My 1991 535i Sport? This Would Be Handy If Anyone Could Shed Any Light On The Situation As I Have A Clean 535 With A Niosy Camshaft And A Scabby Old 530 With A Sweet Head!! Cheers

Might be helpful if you posted your location, or what market these cars were built for. In the USA, a 530i is a small V8, and there's no way a 530i head would fit a 535i.......

Assuming the 530i is a version of the M30 6 cyl, I would be very surprised if that head did fit the 535i M30.....

This must be a euro question, because the states never got the 3.0L M30 in an E34.

No it would not fit. While the valves are nearly identical, the bottom of the head would have to be widened to match the cylinder size. Have no clue if a mod like that is even possible.

You do know that the valves need adjusting from time to time?

Thanks for your help! Saves me breaking a good engine for no reason..

Guys, not true about the head being enlarged. M50 head fits on an M52.. and M50 on an S50 i believe.

The M52 just has a larger stroke, and a S50 barely has a larger bore so it wouldnt make that big of difference. All you need to do to make a M50 into a 2.8 is change the crank and rods, and if you put S50 crank in an M50 you get 2.9. Im sure the head would fit, but it wouldnt be as efficient, but maybe be more, because of increased CR with a smaller combustion chamber. Although a machine shope could take care of it for you if you got the head for a good deal.

Although I've never actually seen an M30B30, I'll wager that it will fit GIVEN that the donor motor is the late M30 design, meaning that it has a matching bigger intake. The only difference that I know of between the mid M30 blocks and the late units is in the filter housing: on the earlier blocks, there's an extra hole to accomodate the oil cooler setup. So, there should be no issue on bolting the head to the short block. The question is whether you'll be able to bolt the 3.5 intake on (it should bolt on, but I don't know for certain) and retain the late M30 air flow. Otherwise, you'll have to convert the car to the 530 intake, possibly the exhaust.
