Anyone know how the 5 series after the E34, think its the E38 gets its speed signal regards MPH/KMH, i know the E34 uses a diff sesnor but it think the later 5 is different

They all use diff speed sensors. I think the last thing that used anything different was the E12, which was a mechanical linkage to a gear in the trans. Only seen three E12s, though..so I could be wrong.

not sure what type of sensor a e38/39 uses in the diff, e34 and older uses a sensor with a magnetic switch that breaks the connection, a abs sensor or crank position sensor is a ac voltage generator

display signal... if your abs controller go's wacko then you lose your speedometer display... and if i recall correctly it uses one wheel abs sensor for that signal.. Edit, it's the left rear wheel sensor as seen belowhttp://www.bimmer.info/%7Ebill/e39speedo.jpg

i herd about those and when you change the wheel bearing you can put it in backwards and be screwed because it only has a tone ring on one side, never seen one but i think it'd be marked as to direction

Absolutely. Not sure what I was thinking...too much bead blasting for me tonight, I guess.
