While diagnosing a non starting engine recently, I had a chance to reinspect the region of my engine near the ignition coils/valve covers.

About one year ago I replaced all the ignition coil boots on my 1995 530i, sopped up all the excess oil that was floating in the cavities around the boots. I also replaced the valve cover gaskets, both which surround the outter vlave cover and also the inner region, where the ignition coil pertrude into the block.

Well the oil is back. Not as much as before, but its there!

Any ideas?

Leaking valve cover gaskets is a big problem on the M60. My local indy started using the Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker when installing the gaskets within the past year or two.

I replaced mine once a few years ago, then the problem was back. Did it again, and even had the covers milled flat, under their recommendation. Problem back again after a year or two.

Then they discovered the Anaerobic Gasket sealer, and recommended using it. I used it and have not had a problem since. Give it a try and see if it doesn't solve your problem.

Shop around for it as the pricing differed a lot last time I looked for it. I think one place wanted $20 a tube and you need a tube for each valve cover. Another place was about $8

Oh, put a thin film of it on the rubber gasket, it is not a replacement for the gasket !!!

Best of luck,

R.
