I have 320i 1997 with M52 Vanos Engine. That engine was produced with aluminium block. The car is now about 115000 km, and has a big oil consumption... about 1 liter per 2000 kilometers. I heard that 1996 and 1997 M 52 motor`s have problems with aluminium engine block and after only 80000 km are ready for general reparation (pistons, rings, cilinders....). What I should do? To replace pistons and rings or to by new block?

these years in the m52 in europe. I strongly suspect that you have one of these nikasil block engines since one of the symptoms is greatly increased oil consumption. I don't know if they offer alusil block replacements or not but replacing pistons and rings won't help if its the nikasil coating on the block eroded away. I suspect your only option is to buy a new block, since the mileage is fairly low i would try and get bmw to cover it.
