So last week Friday I got a call from my mechanic ( http://www.bimmersrus.com ), he told me he was getting an early Christmas gift.

In a word wow... this car is "technically" incredible....

I got taken for a ride in it and its quite an interesting ride. Granted while it has 500HP its still sneaky fast. When really pushed, the SMG transmission shifts abusingly hard.

-----------

Now with all that said, I believe right now a "built" e39 m5 will run with the e60 m5. The v10 reminds me of a honda engine, really long legs but no real grunt.

The v10 engine also makes some bizarre noises at idle, takes some getting used to.

I think you're paying your mechanic too much!!

There's been a lot of ink consumed on the subject of that trans, most of it unfavorable. Suffice it to say that there's a conventional 6-speed in the works for the M5 in '06.

Then you're going to hate to see this...it was a brand new M5 being returned to its owner after having the 1100 mile oil service done...making a left turn...was hit by a Lexus that ran a red light! BTW, the employee driving the car...came back to work that same day after going to the hospital to be checked out...he said "I didn't want to take the rest of the day off".

No reason for a road test after an oil change.

at least it is on the dealers insurance and not the poor owners!
full replacement with hopefully many years of free service to make up for the pain and suffering;)

but a lot of dealerships don't do it because they don't have the time. However, that's what they hired me to do at my dealership. I think their logic is to make sure any repairs were completed properly and to try and find something to upsell. People don't keep their cars up so that's pretty easy to do but my job is just to tell the service writer what needs attention. It's up to him and the customer to determine what gets fixed. I hate the "fix only what it takes to get me home" mentality.

I just drove a new M5 Friday morning but didn't return it looking like this one. Driver was probably more enamored by the new M5 and wasn't paying attention. I've been doing what I do for 10 years so I've driven just about everything with a BMW badge on it. Dealerships owner told me when I first started that don't worry about having an accident because if you do it long enough you eventually will. Well I haven't yet although a few years ago the sales guys asked me to show a prospective E39 M5 customer what it would do and I turned the traction control off and did. ;-) It was a handful and almost got away from me. I feel sorry for the poor guy that wrecked that M5 but I dodge idiots on cell phones everyday so I know it can happen and you not be at fault.
