My mechanic ordered OBC bulbs for my 95 540i from the stealer. The stealer sent 6.5V green ones and insists that they are the correct ones and claims I need 4 of them. I just want to make sure that I really need the black ones (2 or 3), don't I?

I believe it was 3 on mine and the black one's are the correct fit. The green one's can melt your OBC over time. I'm pretty sure the ETK has the wrong part number.

no, wrong. the green 6.5v bulbs will last less than 2 weeks

the black ones are 12v, have a bigger 'stump' bit and last for like 12 years

why are the dealers so stupid?!

btw you need 3, two for the sides and one at the bottom to light up the buttons

THIS:
http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/maintenance/electrical/capacitors.htm
is from Bruno's website.

AND THIS:
http://www.bimmernut.com/~billr/images/airBagAndBulbs_files/airBagAndBulbs.html
is information from Bill R.

Both are sources that can be fairly well relied upon.............to say the least.
I hope this helps.

It was 3 and as other have said - use the 12v (I think 1.2w but don't quote me)... And I dreaded the job because nothing ever seems to go 100% right on this car. It took 3 minutes to get the radio out (no wires to disconnect), the OBC came out in 20 secs or less (follow the procedure - flat wide item on right side, tab on left) and then the bulbs took another 5 min. I couldn't believe it and it is quite nice to have light again...

Good luck,
Scott

I just changed mine tonight (FINALLY ! I'm so proud of me !). You need 3 like they say.

Apparently your dealer is WRONG!!!

Print out this whole thread when you go back for him to see, It's really too bad the dealer insists but is wrong.
