View Full Version : Do Angel Eyes look good on the E34?

Please consider how they look in the daytime as well as at night. Thanks to Bahnstormer and Guapo for the pics. I personally think the question's a no-brainer at night, but in the day, I'm not sure...

Bahnstormer's pics are VERY flattering, but how often do they really look that good? And how often do they look kinda naff?

I voted no because the lights form a complete circle, it should cut off at the top like the E39 lights. Maybe I'm just picky though :)

Fair enough, but if the E39 had a complete circle, or if you were among the 99.99% of people who don't realize that there's a difference, would you answer differently?

Yeah I definitely would. I'm just a perfectionist bastard, I actually really like the look and color.

voted yes....

even though I don't have them... and those aren't real angel eyes... the look is still cool....

I think the original E39 Angle eyes look much better than the after market ones ... as after market lights look very shiny day time .. the original dipbeem lights look dark in the middle and the circle is hidden on the far edge. I was in between to be frank ... I would install the original lights if they fit in ... I didnt like the aftermarket lights at all ...

they should cut off at the top, mybe having eyebrows would help. anyone have a pic?

also these ones are too bright and yellowish during the day, and not close enough to the edge of the lamp imo

Having that BMW brow (as you notice the genius design of the hoodline lightly accenting the top of the headlights) makes the car look agressive, sporty and masculine. I love it. In later headlight designs in all models you can see how BMW ever so slightly brought that hoodline closer to the headlight accenting that brow even more. As the E39 came out we can see that effect was to the degree that the angel-eyes are cut-off by the hood. Beautiful! I agree the full-circle angel-eye look does take away from that. I think the "yellowish" hue was to keep more in line with that OEM E39 color. I attempted to change the bulbs to a more white hue to match my HIDs but they are some weird sized bulb. 4 bulbs per angel eye facing forwards....bad design. I wish they were LEDs so I could have installed white high mcd LEDs to match the HIDs. The OEM E39 ones use a light box with fiber-optics. You can get an aftermarket one but I think installation is cumbersome and tricky. The ultimate would be those CCFL ones which are the best, almost like neon. While they may not have the OEM look, they look amazing matched with HIDs. They look great on the E36s and E46s....I don't know how well they would look on a classic older E34 design.

I'm not a fan of angel eyes on exposed headlamp cars. (e.g. E30/34/32 and earlier). E36 and up, yes they are fine. I just think they look funny (bad) squished into the light housings.

I have Euro smileys, So my vote was based on personal preference. Uniqueness, that is the name of the car game. We don't want to look like sheep. Only unless it is in wolf's clothing. What time is it? I'm going to get in the 535 and go get something to eat.

i think they look stupid without something covering the top parts of the circles.. technically they aren't even angel eyes

when covered i think they look good, although ccfl would be better

whats ccfl?

Cold-cathode, similar to a neon tube. Has a ballast/ignitor. Your color is even the whole way thru (as opposed to 4 little bulbs, or fiberoptic sources at either end), and much brighter/whiter than the other options.

Bad picture of my E36, but you get the idea.

im really interested in e34s, but ive heard of gettin a heat gun, opening up ur lights and throwin ccfl's om there. But what happens to ur other normail night time driving bulbs. Like do u disconect them an rely on ur angels for driving , or are the angels simply not bright enough??

I voted yes, I could be a little biased though as i just fitted a set, but in all honesty, i think they ok in the day, but they really stand out at night, HID low beam with the blueish color looks great and the light output is exellent.

motorman
12-21-2005, 09:04 PM
Angles take the place of the parkers, depending on the kit, you use your normal H1 globes, or if you go HID they are zenon 35 watt but give a higher light output than the 55 watt on the low beam, spots use normal globes, hope this is the info you where after.

Normally, I prefer to keep everthing in my 540i as close as the original...just to conserve the originality & the design.

However, the eye ring looks pretty cool. So, I voted yes...but don't think I will mod my lamps w/ these rings. (Ummm, I just only replaced the low-beam w/ high-beam bulbs 3 months ago...)

Angel lights are city lights, you won't blind anyone with those. Do you mean HID lights? If so, yes they are aggravating on some cars, people need to be considerate and not blind everyone with them.

I voted no - but what matters is what you want for YOUR car. I have the Hella Euro Smileys with City Lights. and I think they look stock but different - in an understated way. Which BTW I think is how these beast cars were meant to be - JT

I personaly like my lights blinding others ... " nasty " :P ... but I hate it when I feel that other car with OEM lights look brighter and intense more than mine ... best was when I removed the metal cover inside ( before the lense ) just widly opened dip beem ...

bahnstormer, can u tell me where from did u get yours? i plan on putting on some angel eyes in the spring and i love how yours look. ccfl is cool but the yellow-ish light looks better on an e34. i don't realy care about day-time apereance because i don't plan on driving with them on in the day anyway

CCFL is just the product. You can get it in different colors, even one like the stock yellowish. The advantage is it's much brighter and evenly lit than the 4-bulb/fiberoptic versions.

i agree, they look weird in day time ,but look good at night. it's just a mater of which one u want to sacrifice. day or night? i'm not sure if i'm going to install them, but if i get hold of some of those yellow-ish ccfl i probably will.

This fad has come and gone on e36s, and I'm looking forward to the day where they're no longer on e34s.

Bosch/Hella Euro ellipsoids are the only option.

They look bad when they are completely round. Instead of looking agressive, they look a little dorky, as if the BMW is wearing full circle reading glasses. Ive seen some CCFL ones on ebay that dont complete the full circle, but they are homemade and need to be fitted inside the headlight glass.

If you think the E39 angel eyes look dorky, thats fine, but i think they make the car look more agressive. Even the X5 looks good with them. On the E34, they look out of place, especially with the full circle.

as you can see, when it's super bright out (sun directly above) it is hard to see them.. if at all. the headlights don't seem to be bright either, for that matter. when it's cloudy, raining, or of course night-time they are very distinct and look great.

the headlights themselves look much better than stock as well (when not lit) .. i get a lot of compliments on the lights

DEPO Projector34's which is what most E34 owners with AE's have are $299 from Umnitza... thats where I got mine.

You might be able to find em for a few bucks cheaper on Ebay, but I dont know that they are DEPO's and there are some that are lower quality than the DEPO's.

you can get the ccfl tubes for really cheap on ebay.fr or the german ebay. but then you need to do the whole install process and it is easily botched, and the tubes have a penchant for being broken in transit to your doorstep. best bet is the DEPO's suggested by Hakwuzhere. Or, (shameless plug) if you want some HID's, you can ask Liquidtiger720, he's selling a set.
