View Full Version : Got the Al parts back from bead blasting....

Coated all the Al in Alodine. The intake is looking sweet. I will clear it. I will also have the valve cover crinkle powder coated. Things are coming together and Thursday should be able to start building the motor.

Break in oil should allow break in around 250 miles.

Aren't you going to clean the parts first?.... I mean before you reassemble everything?:D

it silver, i have only used iridite and alodine 1200 in the past and it was kind of a light gold color... the 1001 looks much better just like the base metal.

I did not pay attention to the bottle we were using and what number it was. They had a 55 gallon drum of the yellow and it would have been easier to do in their big tank. I actually liked the yellow tint on the intake runners of a mercedes engine they had laying around, but it was all or nothing as far as looks go and since the intake looks so good, I figured clear was the better route.

Alodine did not create the shiny silver effect. The bead blasting did. If anything the Alodine dulls it a bit by creating a very thin corrosive barrier. It keeps aluminum corrosion from occurring further. It also provides a very good surface for further clear coating. Over time, if the parts are not clear coated, they will color a bit. In order to achieve similar results and have it last, I suggest the following with a few caveats:

1) bead blast
2) alodine ASAP
3) clear coat parts you want to maintain visually

Caveat: The bead blasting process can leave remnants in nooks and crannies so it is not suggested for anything that faces the inside operation of the engine unless you can ASSUREDLY remove ALL remnants.

sand blasting material is silica particles with sharp edges and it is used for harder metals. it can actually remove material, especially on softer metals

glass beads in bead blasting are round pieces of glass that hit the material and shatter. This destroys less of the material and helps clean the surface.

Yes...I used forced air for a long time on the intake manifold, valve cover (with plate on the inside removed), and oil pan for a long time to make sure no blasting material was leftover

I will weigh the block when I get it back

Damn those are some clean engine parts. Even better looking than when they were straight out of the factory! Can't wait to see it all put back together.

Very inspirational. After seeing your pics, I went out to the garage and wiped off my oil filler cap :)

Buit seriously, with my engine removed, I'm doing a mini clean up. I may even clean, treat and paint the 'new' block I'm dropping in.

just used this kitchen steel wool sponge, which one uses for cleaning frying pans etc.
But the problem is, that probably over the time the light color will change to darker one and all dirt can penetrate. Therefore I want to give it a protection coat. No color.

On my Highline I have the intakes out as I do a lot of other things on the engine room. So that is much easier to do something.
But if engine is in, just try a bit the kitchen steel sponge. You will be surprised.
