my missus zafiras 'check engine' light came on yesterday, i plugged it in today and the lambda sensor code came up, i took it to work today (and accidently had my bimmer key in my pocket ;) ) the car seems to be running fine and she had no noticable loss in power, just seemed 'normal' i cant afford a new one before christmas, so my question is, will leaving it till the new year hurt her car? what adverse effects will it have?

Ha! It's an Opel/Vauxhall, not available in North America. Famous for nifty folding seats that accomdate seven:

yes nifty seats that fold into the floor when not in use, flex7 seating they call it, only problem with it is the tiny 1600cc engine is soooo underpowered, although its vauxhalls 'ecotec' engine that returns 30-35mpg in town and we got on the better side of 40mpg on a long run (270 miles) when we took it on holiday last year and that was 6 up with luggage! a little better than the 18mpg my beloved bimmer gives me, even so i know which id rather drive :D

Your gas mileage will suffer too. Waiting until after the new year shouldn't hurt the engine.

I'm not sure about a zafiras but running overly rich, long term, due to a failed O2 sensor can foul the catalytic converter. (Especially on a 540i.)

That cat can be damaged, exactly as motuman says.
