I used this grade for my 1994 540i, is that ok? I live on Northern California.

That is a little thick for that engine. You can generally get away with 10w30 mobil 1.

0W40 or 5W40 is better.

As everyone else said it is a bit on the thick side. BUT, it is perfectly acceptable for year round use in your climate. I used to run it year round in Atlanta and I know of a very knowledgable gearhead that ran it in his E34 in Chicago year round. If you check the flash and cold pour points of Mobil 1 15W-50, you will see that there should be no protection issues.

I run 15e350 year round in my m30 - but that engine is a very different design than the m60. Those motors were spec-ed to used a light weight oil for economy reasons. You can run anything you want - but given their ability to use light oils - it really helps out with fuel econimy
