Hurry up and go get another two quarts. One to bring it up to the specified 6.1 quarts and one to have on hand when doing periodic checks before the next change. BMWs in general will consume some oil in between changes. Do not start out on the low side of the stick and do not overfill either.
That engine should have alot of life left. Don't kill it prematurely.:)

Never has, even up to 5,000 miles between oil/filter changes.

Young Pete, do you have anowner's manual? It states how much oil to use. Also get a Bentley manual for reference.

Maybe I should clarify things. As they get older, they tend to use a little oil between changes. However, I know people with 2000 year models that do and the stealer tells them thats normal, go figure. The M30 in the 535 does not but the M30 in my 528i does. So does the 2002. Maybe it is the Mobil 1 in the 535. I use regular dino in the others.

No oil loss between changes, none, zero.... Now coolant, that's another subject...

the truth is:

it depends on how long you want to keep this car before the engine decides to retire... if you only want to drive it another year and then you're junking it, you don't have to use more than 5 quarts... so save yourself $3 and skip the sixth quart

if you have a 5-cylinder engine..but I think it's been clearly stated that you go out and buy 2 more :D

edit: 2-qts, not cylinders.

Thanks A Lot.....i Will Now Fill My E34 With Another Quart Of Oil.

I Seem To Lose Some Oil After Every Oil Change Too.....but Considering The Car Almost Has 200k Miles I Try To Let It Go.

Thanks For The Info.

I Love My E34.:)

If you plan on keeping he car for a while you should really try to keep it topped off, even a quart low can cause lubrication problems. I try to check my oil once every couple of weeks or so, and top it off with the spare quart I keep in my trunk. Its just good basic car maintenance.
