Hello, and welcome!

If the engine is well-maintained, you should easily achieve 300,000-400,000km.

Engines and transmissions for these cars aren't terribly expensive, but you probably don't need a replacement; just some maintenance.

Sorry I can't tell you more, but others around here surely will. I'm not the expert. :)

right, rule of thumb is 300k then replace engine. Thats if the compression is low. Chances with a well maintained motor with synthetic is it will last much longer...and yes you can beat on it every now and then without hurting it.

the m20 I motor if cared for is good for a good 300k miles by then it will probably want some head work, crappy treatment will get it about 200k miles before a head rebuild, the bottom end doesn't really wear out

had a head come in from a 87 325is from a car that was part of a inheritance, aparently sister got it and brother didn't like that so he took it around the block a few times in first gear, i have never seen such valve train wear in my life even on a mercedes (the old 190/300e motors eat cams/rockers like popcorn and i had one 190 that was close), everything was so worn the cam wouldn't open the valves anymore, the oiling system is just not designed to deal with that kind of operation, maybe with the right grade of synthetic and a bigger oil cooler
