View Full Version : GTO blew by me today in a curve!!!

Boy did I feel embarrassed today. I was heading home on a four lane curvy/ hilly 50-55 mph by-pass road. A two door coupe was tailgating a bit. I punched it up a bit going into the first of a series of two curves. He hung on so I pushed it up to about 80 plus in the second curve. I actually had it floor boarded at that point. He cut into the right lane and just BLEW BY ME by me in the curve so quick that I am not sure what the car was!

I think it was newer GTO, the 2004 version without the hood scoops and other stuff. Actually, I feel better now that I know he had about 350 HP to my 190 hp. When I punched it at about 80 in a curve, I sure knew I had a six. This about the only time I wish I had the 540.

Just an observation.

Russel, if that was one of the great Aussie built GTO's, feel safe in knowing that in 4 years time that car will be crap and yours will still be the same.

if it is the newer one, your looking at 400 hp there bud, i lined up with a leguna seca blue g35 sedan, it was about from 50-100, and he wasent gaining on me, not enought to pass anyways, felt pretty cool.

I think it was a GTO. It was so generic and bland looking it was hard to tell. In four to five years it will be junk/forgotten and my e34 should still be running fine. With a little TLC of course!

If it makes you feel better, I posted a faster time than a GTO at our last autocross! Score one for the good guys.

Ya I was about to say, a 540im or M5 with Z-rubber and lowered springs would maybe give it a run for it's money.

not really, 540ia=282 hp, 300 hp chipped, GTO 2005 model 400 hp, at best you giving 100 hp to the goat, that quite a bit.

they are quick but no comparison at fast highway speeds like our cars...I dont like them since they seem to copy the grills from the BMWs. 2nd ex had a G Prix and it seemed very tiney sounding with the stereo being the best part of the entire car.

Yes, then it was a GTO (or a Toyota Camry with supercharger)! :D

Give me the Aussie HSV version in 4 door. The SV6000. 400hp - 6 speed, limited slip.

You know, with a supercharger you could bump that 525 up to 700 or 800 hp... at least that's what I've heard... :)

Yeah - I'd like to see a 16 year old pontiac that was worth it's weight in mud. Modern American cars (of which I proudly own one, a 2002 Tahoe) are built to snap together once, work for 100k miles, then fall apart at every junction.

The side-view mirror assy broke on my Tahoe because it barely bumped the garage on the way in a few months back. GM forums I looked at revealed this to be a very common problem. Snap-together assembly that cannot be disassembled without destroying it... and to replace the whole mirror was a few hundred dollars! I figured since it wasn't meant to be disassembled, I might as well epoxy it back together... so far so good!

PS - Anyone want to buy a great looking Tahoe with 90,000 miles?

1. Droppy headliners
2. Pealing door panels
3. Blow apart radiators
4. Leaking intake seals - v8s
5. Heater core o rings
6. Aux water pumps
7. Cracked seat mounting brackets
8. No retourque valve cover gaskets - m50/M60

While our cars are wonderful. They have their fair share of problems. From a value perspective. My $42,000 sedan is work $6,000 15 years later and the wear shows. Its all a mater of what and how you take care of a car. Everything has its engineering faults and everything has something that wears out.

Its just a matter of how great is the forum that supports your ride :)

You need to upgrade to a 540 and then supercharge it. I had a run in with a 05 GTO the other day. Wasnt even that close. I ate him for lunch. But his car was an auto, i am sure that didnt help him and mine is a 6-speed. Started out in 2nd and I pulled on him pretty quick. By the time I hit 110 he was 2-3 car lengths back.

I drove the new Dodge Charger as a rental while in the Long Beach,San Diego region of California for 3 weeks. Its on the same Mercedes platform as the the 300M Chrysler.
If GM has put ANY effort in the GTO's suspension tweaks to the likes of the Charger I drove.......then its far superior than my older 91' 525I is with mods. And I'm no fan of either make prior !
I hated to admit it, but its true. It was a great handling and stopping machine. I'm sure one with the Hemi would have been THAT much MORE fun rather than the V-6 I was driving.
They have risen to the challenge, but our cars are old.......how do the new BMW's ride and power compare.....apples to apples ??

When I hear about cars with 400 hp, I always wonder what good they are except for killing yourself.

And they bleed your bank account dry on the way to your death bed. Rates are based on horsepower to body weight and accident rates. My e30 convertible was much more expensive to insure than than the e34 of the same year. I have an acquaintence who owns a viper and the insurance is so expensive he can't afford to have his wife as a driver on the policy.

BadKarma--you are an insurance guy. Can you give us a quote on what it costs to insure that GTO?

I can tell you that having a car with 400hp is way to much fun......and having a car that doesnt look like it has 400hp is even more fun. My only complaint is that it will completly lite up the tires if you let it, but if you dont mine a 10yr old non suspecting car letting out a little tire smoke now and then......then a supercharged 540 is the way to go. You should see the looks I get from people on the street, they would never imagine it to have the power it does. Ive came across many the new mustang and C-5 vet that was like WTF.....did I just get spanked my an old ass BMW???

gayle, not the point at all. to prove your point you might as well drive a 518i or somthing, youd barley be able to turn those neat 18's you got on there now with a 518, the point isnt to kill yourself, its to have a bit of fun, to pull in front of your friends house and leave in a cloud of smoke. :)

as it must, you must have realized you were going to get strong opposition to a comment contesting the need for 400hp. come on!

though i get you point galye, i would opt for 400 hp if i could

He did not want to play. Not sure why. However, he did acknowledge my presence with a nod and a wave. It was for sure a black GTO, rear spoiler and hood scoops and looked rather low. BTW, what size is the engine on these things. Looked like a 5.7 litre badge on the trunk lid??

Yes, then it was a GTO (or a Toyota Camry with supercharger)! :D

400 bhp ... ( or maybe a bit less now for mine after 19 years ) can be glorious !
and is the absolute opposite of self harm etc ... this is demonstratable in the right environment.

they have actually stopped making them as of three weeks ago. seems that theyll just wait another 25 years before having another go. nothing that special about a bloody 2 door commodore, even at $80k au, what a joke.
