I replaced my stock 9006 low beam bulbs with modified standard Sylvania 9005s about 2.5 years ago. One failed this week. It seems as some people have had very short bulb life span with this type of conversion, particulary with Silverstars. I think 2.5 years is fine.

Any other brand bulb to use? I have heard of GE NightHawk, but not used them.

Just my experience to date. BTW, my high beams seem very strong with stock 9005 bulbs which have never failed in the 3 years I have owned the car.

9005 bulb has limited life span... just compare the hours stated on the package to regular 9006... it is multiple times difference. Any higher spec bulbs like +30, or +50 and any names in between is an improvement over regular bulb. Except the cool blue bulbs... those are not as good in wet driving condition. Our eyes are not designed for blue light vision... yellow is our biggest strength.

Try a search on the Nighthawks, seems like there was a good review here a while back.
