I am trying to determine if my E34 is equipped with EWS or not.

5-speed auto left-hand drive euro 525iSE build date 12/94, VIN: WBAHD61050GK60634

Hope the attached images might provide some clue to those who are not EWS dummies like myself.

DME Bosch sticker image to follow.

Cheers from Taiwan for any insight ...

Jason

DME = Part 12141427273 (Bosch M3.3.1 ECU) (realoem.com)
Dummy EWS ignition ring cover = Part 61358368340 (realoem.com)

As per the photo, the stock chip is:

1 267 358 715
0 261 200 413

Everything except for the stock chip software version leads me to believe I do not have EWS-II ...

see here on the e34 but he would have EWS I which doesn't have a transponder key so the dummy would have been in place of the inductive loop on the ignition. Since the transponder key came along shortly after his car was produced that could account for the dummy http://www.bimmernut.com/%7Ebillr/images/ewsagain.jpg

That sure is odd. Your grey label DME is the color of the EWS DME, you have the EWS software label on the chip ( 1 267 368 715) but it doesn't appear like you really have EWS. It would be interesting to read that chip and see what's in it.

(Jason ordered a chip from me, I sent the EWS chip, and his car does not start)

Your page says that early '95 cars don't have EWS-II and that late ones do - if Bill R is right (isn't he always?) all MY 1995 cars have it. Maybe that's the problem?

EWS-II was introduced in 12/94. (so late 95 cars have it)
A car made in Sept 94 would be called a 1995 model here.

He has an EWS DME (grey) and the chip has the EWS-II software label.

Maybe he has EWS-II but it's not enabled - that would explain the dummy keyring.

Thanks for all the comments and info about EWS, what a great board ... I guess my next question would be to Mark: whether I should pull the stock chip and send it to him, or should I take it to someone here who can download the data off the chip (not sure who that would be, my bmw dealer?) and then send him the data by email?
