Anyone ever have this problem;

The starter work flawlessly most of the time. Sometimes, it sounds like the starter grinds and it does not turn the engine over. I have replaced the starter thinking that it was on its way out......real bummer of a job without having resolved the problem. Battery in new. Any thoughts?

Hi,

Interesting, have you checked the condition of the teeth on the flywheel? You could have one or two missing/damaged and when it lines up with the starter, it won't engage.

If you can, the next time it happens, turn the engine over a fraction by hand, using the crank pulley. If it now engages, you may have identified the cause.

OK, the teeth on the fly wheel are good. Could it be the ignition switch?

probably the only thing i don't like about the e34 is that the starter, even when in good working order, sounds so tinny and lame. thank god the aftermarket exhaust thunders in shortly after
