My driver's door will not stay open. I believe that the spring-loaded part inside the door that is part of the door brake assembly is shot. Has anyone else been through this? Are there any adjustments I can make or am I going to have to replace the door brake?

I had this happen some time back. The door brake spring eventually breaks.
The unit will require replacement as the springs are not available as a seperate item and, even if they were, it would be a hell of a job changing one as they are under a lot of tension.

My problem when ordering a new assembly was BMW had no record of the part number of my original unit. I was provided with a door brake with a different part number and the assembly itself was not identical either, though it did fit and function correctly. Ditto on the door brake. Also inspect the door sheet metal itself.

We sell the brake, and the plates to fix broken sheet metal:

A major cause of the metalwork cracking is due to lack of lubrication of the brake arm and roller assembly. If you ever begin to hear a groaning sound along with noticing the door is becoming harder to open and close make sure you lubricate it ASAP!

What's the best thing to lubricate a door with? Just wondering... My rear doors could use a bit of stuff I think.
