Ohh, sorry, was so excited about that that I read 600 and that would be the HP. But 400 is 100 more than normal.
Anyway, I know from my 750's how tight the engine room is in the E32 for the V12, I never would like to touch the engine in the E34 engine room. Or first I should have to break my arms several times to get to all parts ;-)

A V12 stuffed into a e34 and not one photo of the engine compartment in the ad. Since the engine is the most important thing they're selling it seems to me you'd have a photo of it.

they don't want to scare off would be DIY buyers, engine compartment with no room to move = no sale!

Only 400 hp with such a wild swap ... He could have gone s38b38 with a chip and exhaust and had the same thing. Maintenance on those 2 is about the same. lol

yea but that engine has so much torque.. let's not get confused by the hp figure

Yes, but think about it ... Stock for stock, m70 has only 35 lb.ft more than the s38b38 and 40 hp less. The ad says it took 600 labor hours to tune it or whatever ... regardless of if he did it on his own, or paid someone to do it, he could have turboed, supercharged or done whatever to the s38 or the m30 that the car had.

I guess then it wouldnt be as 'unique'.

i'm sure 600 hours is a gross exageration anyway. i've got an 850 and outside of the electronic setup, the engine bay is not much different from the e34. it wouldn't be as hard a transplant as one would think.

While Brandon J's S38 was getting put in his E34, this car was at the shop getting it's work done. It's been for sale on various spots for the last three years. The place listing it for sale has always tried to have some sort of E34 M5 on their lot ever since I have known of them (last 5 years). Last time I went there about two years ago they had a red 1991 M5 and a red 1993 M5. Both were in ok, but less than desireable condition.

isnt this the same one that has been for sale for some time now?

Wouldn't that make for a nose heavy car?

As far as I have heard, he moved the firewall back a bit and some other 'mirosurgical' measures were necessary.
More a car for show competitiom that for serious driving.
I assume that he liked the challenge to do the impossible.

When I see that engine pic I just think about maintenance probs.
On my 750 I use a telescope mirror and a telescope magnet very often to service.
Last weekend I took off the intakes and about 50% of the screws deep down dropped off the wrench when removing them. w/o the magnet no possibility to get them out.
To get to the screws at the intake flanges I extra bought a 400 mm long extention. But a very thin one, otherwise again probs.

Leo Franchi built that car (and either he or the guys at midwest did the motor,) and it'd be a gross underestimation to think that the S38B38 would keep up.

There are a few of these floating around. The earliest one that I've heard of used the complete M70/4hp-22/24 driveline back around '89/'90. They had problems getting the shift points correct on the E34, versus the E32 weight. My shop did one of these swaps. The original car was a euro M5. Now it's much faster.

Few people realize how detuned the M70 really is. The heads don't flow, the cams aren't hot. Handle those two elements admirably, and you have something on par with (or better than) an S70.

Erich, I'm kind of surprised that this was posted -- that car's been for sale for years, as others have mentioned, and the "E34 v12" topic is beaten to death around here ;)

best, whit
