Is there a way of getting the chrome grille surrounds off without breaking the clips at the back? There's not much room to push them down and once they are they still won't push out.

Not thaat I've ever heard, or been able to do myself. You could try heating them and see if you can get some flexibility that way -but I doubt that will work.
At least that part is cheap to buy.

A shot of penetrating oil and a thin flat-blade screwdriver helps. So would heating it somewhat with a hair dryer. That said, there's a pretty good chance that you'll crack the plastic in one or two of the mounting holes, and need to re-glue it later. OTOH, the plastic trim piece that you're removing is very light and does not require much strength to hold it, so a cracked mounting hole or two is no big deal.

I have found the best way is to speed up to about 15 mph and run into another car. Call the insurance company - sit back and let someone else screw around with the grille.

Its a pain !

even if you bust the tabs off you can use silicone to glue it back on.

When I had mine off probably half of the tabs on one side were broken, it still held the trim on well. I'll probably replace it when I get new trim sometime.
