Servotronic steering?

hi all, i'm a new member from the U.K. and have a 1992 535i sport manual.
I have been told that the servotronic steering box is knackared and it will cost nearly £1000 pounds from a dealer, however i thought that servotronic was only available on the M5?
If this is the case would it be possible to fit a complete rack and everything from a standard 535i?, has anyone ever done this?
