I am thinking about replacing my auto tranny (that has given me enough problems and i believe it is going to go in a few thousand miles) in my 525
With a Manual tranny from an M5 with an S38B36 engine. I have everything that comes with a manual transmission - LSD, Driveshaft, everything, but does anyone know if it is a direct bolt on to the M50 engine? I believe its a getrag 280 tranny (im not sure). It came off an M5 manufactured on 1/91 if that helps...

Nope. Don't think it will work. The M5 is derived from the M30 block, not the M50 you have.

How'd you come by a M5 tranny setup?

This guy has an M5 with a warped head that hes parting out so Im thinking getting the whole tranny setup from it.

I would get a great deal and it would have everything in it so I want to be absolutely sure whether it would work or not. I eman in theory i can get the whole drivetrain but repairing that engine would be rather costly... And I already have a BMW :-B

You are better off to sell what you have parts & car - and procure a manual transmission car.

sounds fair, I just wanted to make sure i couldnt do that... Given that I almost have it right now and all the parts with me, you know - would be much easier for me to put it in and all...

If someone actually tried that - what is a differnce between a getrag 280 and a 260/5 or a 260/6? - (260/5 and 260/6) is basically the same tranny...

Sounds like Jason's drivetrain...

There was one on eBay recently with a cracked timing cover, sold for $3800 or something like that.

the driveshafts will not fit your hubs either.the m5 shafts are the same as the 540 but different to all the six potters.
