I have the old engine out and I am swapping the starter, alt, ps pump, etc. and I have a question about the clutch. I don't know if I should buy a 540i clutch or a 530i clutch. I am using the 530i tranny by the way but I don't know if the 530i clutch will hold the extra power and I don't know if the 540i clutch will work with the 530i trans. I know, it's confusing! I don't want to spend the money just to have the wrong parts. Any help would be great!

the clutches are different, the 530 uses a 240mm cluth and the 540 uses a 265mm.

Both transmissions are different too, the 530 is either an S5d 310z-THDG or S5D 320 ZTHDY...a 5 speed

the 540 is a S6S G TAGR...a 6 speed

I dont know if the 3.0 will even bolt up the the 540

Might want to start shopping.

TMK, the 5 speed getrag behind the M60B30 won't fit the B40. I could be wrong...

you might find the driveshaft and diff are different too

you might find the driveshaft and diff are different tooGiven the engine has a different torque range and power output and a different transmission I'll take a bet they are...

Sounds like a good project. If you have to change the trans perhaps you could negotiate a swap somewhere.

I'd look in the ETK for differences in the diff gears and tailshaft part numbers. If the tailshaft is the same, the difference in the diff might be so small it could make an improvement (or no real difference) depending on your driving style. :) Nick

the 540s use a much larger rear differential to compensate for torque, it will hold up as long as tou dont shock load it. I believe you can swap to the larger rear by changing the braketry, and yes the driveshaft looks to be different, probably because of the difft trans.

You do have a project.

Why don't people fill out their profile details? How can we know what year your car is, or where you are located (US/euro models differ)?

I was wandering if the problem is that the gearbox might fit but not the clutch. In which case does the 530 flywheel fit the 540 crank end? although you would have to change the clutch more often.

Just a thought while you think about saving up for all the other bits everybody else has mentioned.

Good luck and

All the best

I have a 94 530i. Externally both the 3 and 4 liter are identical so say the tech at my local bmw dealership and bav auto recyling. I want to use my original 5-speed tranny and diff. I just need to know if I should use a beefy 530i clutch or a stock 540i clutch.

I'm not surprised. It doesn't make sense to design two new engines so close in displacement with different bell housing bolt patterns. I think I'd use the largest stock clutch that will fit. The only question is will the 540i disk fit the input shaft spline on the 530i trans.

That's the way, try to get away with a 530 clutch and be easy on it if it does fit, use the accelerator pedal only between gears :)

OK. You're assuming he puts the 530 MT flywheel on the 540. I assumed he had the 540 MT flywheel, in which case the issue becomes fitting of disk on input shaft of the 530 trans.

Im also wondering if the flywheel does bolt to the engine will that throw the balance off or are theses engines completly internally balanced?

I believe the blocks are all the same ... the 5-speed bolts to the 4.0 and 4.4 and the 6-speed bolts to the 3.0 if you want.

Check out the link for an interesting swap ...
