my tranny is on its last leg. it looks like i may need a replacement in the spring. i'm seriously considering spending the dough on a Metric Mechanic tranny and i'm wondering if anybody has any thoughts, experiences or recommendations. are MM trannies as bulletproof and long lasting as advertised?

I'm not aware of anyone who's purchased an MM tranny on this board. I do have some of their engine parts.

Call Jim Blanton @ Blanton Transmission before you buy the MM unit.

I have a 1990 535im with 117k. I bought the car in 2000. It has a mm rebuilt gertrag 5 speed in it. I think - maybe - Jim was at mm when the unit was rebuilt by the prior owner.

It is tight and very smooth. I have had no problem in 30,000 miles. red-line fluids.

Make sure to get a short shift kit.

thanks for the input everybody!! i'll fire off an e-mail to Jim Blanton shortly. just curious, what's the story behind MM? have they changed owners recently? Jim Blanton isn't affiliated with them in any way is he? i'll probably do the short-shift kit thing as well ...
