At least 5 years. It's much smarter financially and for my peace of mind, having a car I know everything about. Granted I've only owned it for about 4 months now. 125k miles on the original Nikasil, hoping to get at least 200k.

It all depends. I am happy with this one, but if a low miles 5 or 6 spped came along, who knows.

im not trying to be a jerk, but weren't you on ebay last week or so selling your coils because your car was crashed?

It all depends on what other vehicles I pick up in the future and available garage space. :p

Depends... finish College in a few years and after that I could use a truck.

But I sure would like to keep my car around for an LS6 engine.

....until they get well into 200K miles... then maybe...? that'd put the '5 at about it's half life right now... so 10 more years.. which means I give it to my daughter to take to college? who knows.

Yep - had to part out one of the three '95 540s that I bought new 11 yrs ago. It could not be resuscitated for less than the car was worth. It was just approaching 85K on it and in great shape. What a pisser.

untill someone steals it or I have a really bad accident in it.

The guy I bought my manual shift E34 535i from had a problem in his wrist so was having difficulty shifting gears and had to get an auto. His bad luck was my good fortune - the car had only the one careful owner since new and only 93000km. Here in Australia there is an opinion that when you get to middle age you should have an affair or buy a Harley - I decided to get reacquainted with a stickshift sporty sedan after about 16 years of driving auto Jaguars. I am so pleased with the BMW I think I will keep it until my wrist packs up (hey from shifting gears!)

I am not sure how long I will keep my E34 but this is certain, there will always be an E34 in my driveway. It just might be a V8 with sport seats and style 5s.

5 years plus. if/when this "dies", i can only imagine buying a $500-sub $1000 car and putting this into mothballs until it is back online. i don't see any reason why this wouldn't be in my possession in 10-20 years, for reasons of nostalgia.

I've had it for 12 years now - and it's still the best sports sedan I've driven: it's still near mint, so it will be here for another decade ... or two.

I said the same thing about my Volvo 240. Then I got in the BMW. Nostalgia fades when you're in a 330ci convertible.

Until it's over 200K miles, currently 170K... Actually, as long as it continues to run as well as it did the past 15K, I see no reason to look around for another car. When the car becomes really old and tired I'll kill it myself, funeral.

No sweat - no harm, no foul.

You've got some great advice in the forums. Keep contributing!

I'll ride it until it just can't be saved - looks like a very long time. After all these years, I have become very accustomed to not having a monthly car payment.

I've always been nostalgic about my E12. Until I bought an E34... How will I feel about the E34 when an E39 beckons?

Thing to be learned... don't impluse by a bmw at the stealership....

Unless somthing much better becomes available at a good price (not likely in the forseeable future), drove a brand new holden commodore rental tuesday, it sucked.. muddy steering, lousy suspension, flat seats, crap stereo, no acceleration, noisy flat sounding engine, terrible transmission....
Drove my 540 through the back hills of the Dandenongs (a hilly range) east of Melbourne on Thursday and absolutely loved it, couldnt wipe the smile off my face all day.
this is compared to a 10 year old car. what are they doing.

that's in the works for mine, i am getting $5500 for it with crappy paint and a small central locking problem that it's had since i built the car almost 50k miles ago, i have between 2000 and 2500 in it with the mods

Not quite. One was purchased new and after it was paid for - 3 years later - I got a "pre-owned" 540 and then the third in 2000 - when the price was reasonable. ;)

hey i didn't need to say more then "i was thinking about offering my 535 to you" he had just been t-boned in his e32 and had been lusting after my 535 for a while, "what ya want for it?" "$5500" "cool give me a couple months"

hmm...
