Just out of interest, I'd like to find out what RPM people's engine's are running at when doing 70MPH.

In my particular case (UK 94 520 manual) it's about 3100, I suspect the larger E34's will be running lower?

Cheers,
Stu.

not 100% sure at 70mph. But at 80mph, I am at 3100. Probly around 2800 or so for 70mph.

My moms 740i is around 2500 @ 80mph. go figure.

535 5speed with a 3.73 diffy - about 2800 at 70mph. If you run the stock diffy - 3.46 - it's about 2300 or so IIR.

My 535 runs at about 2500 at 70mph if I remember.... About 2800 at 75. I just did a 1300 mile trip, averaged 71.5 mph and 23.8 mpg...... I was really happy with that (was diving 80-85 most of the time on the highway, sometime 90 and up, got to love southern cal driving).

My 91 525i sport manual runs at about 2900rpm at 70mph. The gearing is bang on for the engine, as by nature 24v engines produce their torque higher in the rev range. If it was running a lot lower than that motorway inclines would be problem. The way its set up you can boot it at 70mph and it shifts.

It starts to really come on cam about 90mph.

Your 520i is a couple of hundred rpm higher at 70mph as it need more revs under its belt to make sure it can cope with inclines and overtakes etc.

Just got back from an 800 mile round trip & can certainly say that at 80 I'm at 3100. Never looked at 70 because I was too busy yelling at the SOB in front of me at the time.

416 miles in 5 hours 45 minutes needle stayed at 80 unless that sob was present. 27.4 miles to the gallon. 545 miles off the tank going out last week and a good 130 of those miles were spent doing the 3 mile trip to the liquor store.

I will say I am glad that I chose to rent a beach house on Pawleys Island, SC last week. This next one will be a booger over there. Good luck to those in that area.

2700 @ 70mph, although it was a lot higher (Didn't exactly see the tach) at around 65 mph with the kickdown button in operation and still in 3rd gear.

I can answer that one... same car, same diff!

Little vacuum gauge reads 20 - 25 when going mostly level, OBC tells me I'm in the 27 MPG range - remember though that I have a 3.5 Bar FPR so it's probably a little high.

While in 5th gear is the only time I get above 1700 RPMs unless I need to pass someone or merge or something.

Something's screwy with my setup then. I need to double check my mileage but I think I'm getting in the low twenties on a 3.73. That's granny peddlin' it. I'm really wondering if my camshaft is giving me the strange results.

This is the first tank of gas as I ride my bicycle to work. I drove from Davis, CA to San Jose, CA and back Saturday night. I set the cruise at 65 most of the way. About 200 mile round trip. The OBC tells me 23.3 mpg for the trip. My experience with the e28 and e30 OBC is that they are close but overestimate mpg and that they are closest when you run the tank close to empty and worst if you refill at say 3/4 full already. The gas gauge still indicates well over 1/2 tank but they seem to be optimistic until 1/4 remaining then drop rapidly. I can email or pm you once I fill up or if others are interested I will post here. I will actually calculate mph rather than rely on OBC. It may be a month or so before I fill up again so be patient.

Oh, I did have the A/C on for part of the trip to San Jose but not at all on the trip back.

thx
