I am looking at a 98 e49 540 sport this weekend with 100k on it and I printed a carfax out but it does not show if the engine has been replaced under recall.

Is there a way to see if it is a Nikasil or Alusil block?

Or was this not a issue on the E39 and just the E34?

Thanks!
Jake

When or did they stop using Nikasil?

If it's a US car, the thing should be fine.

All M62B44 -- the 4.4 liter V8 -- found in US cars were alusil.

That's an e39 you are looking at and you don't need to worry about nikasil issue. It's only the e34 v8's that were affected. Greg M.

If im not mistaken, the early e38 740i's still had the nikasil issue.

You are probably right. I was just referring to 5 series BMW's.

The E32, E34 and early E38 were all available with the M60B40 (or 30) and all are potentially running a nikasil block.

The only way to tell is to check the casting numbers. Even pulling the intake to see a "DOT-R" sticker won't remove all doubts because the early blocks (before BMW understood what was going on) were simply nikasil replacements.

Thanks guys! It seems they stopped producing them between 93 and 95 so no worries on the E39's. Ill have to post picks if I buy it.
