Yeah Kris, That M30 engine sure has a strange roots-type whipple charger and mounted sideways transverse on the block. First time I have ever seen such a charger used in a BMW. Normal Powerdyn, Vortec or Rotrex centrifugal blowers were used and mounted more conventionally above the alternator/ps pump side.
The whipple blower typically was used in Mercedes SC (older ones). The plumbing is pretty conveluted too...

That E30 M20 engine turbo looks like an awesome setup.
