Been looking at some alpina piks and found this: http://www.bmwm5.com/photo/data/510/9942B10d.jpg
are these controls very rare items? I've never seen these before only the two dials and 3 slider controls, are they only available on the alpina or something?

Standard on E32 with Klimatronik, and I think also on later (?) E34.
There is another version with AUC, where the system automatically changes to recirculation if the outside air is bad.
That needs this sensor under the hood near to the radiator

Hi han,

it would be useful for the future, if you could add something about your car, engine, built year/month etc.
You cann add that forever by using on the top your user profile.
What do you drive, engine, built month/year, automatic transmission, manual trans, aircondition, klimatronik, no aircon etc.
Then for sure the E34 experts can tell you.
If you need the exact month /year your car has been built and the correct engine type such as M30B35 or whatever, do a search for VIN decoder, type in the last 7 digits of your chassis number and then you find the details. This is sometimes very important to assist you in case of a problem, as there were many changes over the years of production.
For example some early cars do not have a microfilter, later ones from a ceratin date / month/year have it.

Just use on the top of this page 'user c/p on the left and change your profile.
And for 530i Automatic write 530iA. A=automatic transmission
VIN decoder is here
http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi
Is the engine a straight 6 engine? = M30B30
or
V8 engine = M60

All mentioned in the VIN decoder.
Also have a look here, all links are from my website below

You can also get an owner manual. There is one online here. Just use the search on top.
Check for the heater valves if the temperature is sometimes hot and/or cold without changing the temperature wheel.
Maybe they do not close. Usually they are open if they do not get any 12V.

not uncommon,i think all 535is have it,they were made as M5 replicas....I dont think it would be worth swapping, unless you can do it for virtually nothing.
FWIW my car was manf in dec 89
