When has anyone accepted the horsepower in their engine and didn't try to modify it? ;) Case in point are those wackos at Hennessey Motorsports (sp?) who tune Vipers. They have a twin turbo Viper that hits 60 mph in less than 3 seconds. It has over 1000 horsepower. I mean, talk about overkill.

Ship engines are BIG BIG BIG beasts. I live in an area where shipbuilding was everywhere 40 years ago. I saw a drawing of a DOXFORD engine from that era once, and I thought that was huge. You could probably fit ten doxfords into that ginormous engine here!!

Cheers,

Shaun

This is a container ship so it explains why it uses regular engine to propeller design. Most large cruise ships uses electric motors to drive the propeller, the diesel just generate electricity to drive the motors. I guess keeping the cost down by using direct shaft drive to get it moving. This explains why such ships takes 5-10 mins to turn.

Wonder what the fuel consumption is like. 2 litres per turn ?.

If you sold your three story apartment in Malibu and used the entire proceeds to buy the oil, it might, just might, register on the bottom of the dipstick! :p

Actually ship motors are generally dry sump affairs. With the motor stationary it is possible to open a door into the crankcase and literally walk around the crank and big ends.

its a two stroke...wonder if they have to mix oil in with the gas :DIt's a two stroke diesel (well, fuel oil in this case), so - no. :)

Diesels make much better two-strokes than gas engines do; mostly because they don't mix fuel/air until the moment of combustion.

Anyhow - just a FYI moment. Carry on. :)
