Practically speaking, how much difference is there between, say, an '88 BMW 635 csi and a '90 535i ?

Seemingly, the cars would be pretty much the same, except for sheet metal and two vs. four doors.

Can someone who is knowledgeable please compare and contrast these two cars, in terms of performance and maintenance?

635 - Designed in the late 70's - All the bits are old school BMW.

535 - much more up to date components all the way around.

About the only thing that is similar is the motor and the injection system.

Two very different cars.

right, and an 1988 635CSi bases on the E28, so it's better comparable to this one. the engine of a 635CSI with catalyst has 185hp, the E34 535i has 211hp.
