your tranny is not computer controled so you will not get a 3rd gear limp mode or trans program message, it's a good chance you have the classic zf4hp22 tranny failure where the a-clutch pack is burned up due to by-passing internal seals on the main input shaft, i did a small write up a while back about fixing it, it's on the first page of the forum in the engine & drivetrain section under two zf repairs i think
