Hi,
I just bought something on German ebay for 200 Eur. The seller did not have payment options and now he tells me he only accepts payment via Western Union. If I remember from the past, there was something fishy about using Western Union for payments. Any ideas, experience or advice on this? I was hoping to pay via Paypal or bank money order, but he doesn't have paypal and wants fast payment.
Thanks.
Steven G.

What does his feedback look like? Can you post a link to the auction?

I've used Western Union to Germany both for receiving and sending money. The process is pretty quick and they can have their money the same day you send it. It is expensive though and will cost around $35-$40 so you have to be aware of that. The main thing I do when dealing with European sellers, and the language barrier, is to make sure payment options are understood before bidding and you have to sort of be able to read between the lines as to the honesty and trustworthiness of the seller/buyer. You can stuff an envelope full of greenbacks and send it Next Day Express but it would still cost around the same amount and is no safer from getting ripped off. You'll just have to justify to yourself is the item is worth the gamble. If you don't feel right about it don't do it and try to compromise with the seller by paying his listing fee's, etc., in order to avoid the negative feedback.

Good luck!

Paul

Don't use western union to pay for any ebay purchase. Check into ebay and what their take on this payment option is.

Well, I don't speak German, but from the looks of his feedback at least one, if not two out of ten where less than happy. I'd make him a counter offer to use a third party escrow service, but I wouldn't wire money to him via Western Union. If I understand correctly when you do that there is no recourse.

I did some research on ebay and they want you to report sellers who insist on using instant money transfer services such as Western Union or MoneyGram. Below is taken from ebay:

What to avoid
Paying with instant money transfer services such as Western Union and MoneyGram that send cash instantly from storefront locations, by telephone and over the Internet. These payment methods are unsafe when paying someone you don't know. Instant cash transfer services do not provide purchase protection and are not covered by the eBay Standard Purchase Protection Program.

I did that and am hoping ebay gets back to me. I don't trust the seller anymore and I sent an email advising him that I have cancelled my bid on the above grounds. We'll see what happens - learn something everyday.
Thanks for all your help - will let you know the outcome.

I wonder if eBay will work you and remove the negative feed back in instances such as this where the payment terms were not specified in the auction text since they caution against Western Union.

Of course they are going to recomend against payment methods other than PayPal, they own PayPal. I wouldn't put a lot of stake in what ebay says about Western Union, but I wouldn't send the money to this guy using it either :D

Don't think that it will be instant ... it took months for my resolution and the only way they contact you is via email, so keep an eye on it.
Payment via western union is very unsafe ... I had a friend scammed this way.

I don't like Western Union for it can be a scam but it also cost more. i think you should look at the guys feedback score and them make your desision as to pay or not

I take it that you're a new ebayer. Some important points:
1. Research the seller BEFORE bidding.
2. If it feels bad IT IS.
3. Even though sellers are bound by specific acts of parlaiment in their own country they can screw you from across the waters.
4. Contact them and try and sort out a different payment option.
5. Is 1 neg feedback from them worth 200 euro??? I doubt it. You can reply to negative feedback and tell why you didn't pay.

I hope you can sort it out.
