has anyone tried purchasing a "rebuilt" head from a mail order outfit, if so how were your experiences? i came across a business that sells an m30 rebuilt head for $650 with no core charge.

i'm planning to rebuild my head and wanted to see what my options are. would anyone know how much am i saving going the mail order route?
thanks

there are pros and cons of doping mailorder, pros are they are usually cheaper, the shop has all the time in the world to do them. IE they usually work on non specific customers stuff when times are slow. cons are, you cant go there and complain if the stuff is not done right such as not replacing the guides, shitty valve job etc. same thing can happen with a local shop also, you take a chance with mail order, do your research to make sure people are happy with their products. All in all mail order reman heads can be up to 50% off a local shops rates.

You may find it much cheaper to have it done locally. Your head may need no more than a valve job and a surface cut - which will be much less thatn $650. If you have a crack it can be repaired, the mail order place might decline your core if they feel the crack is to bad. Doesn't cost anything but a little time to parade it around to a few local machine shops and get an estimate before you mail anything off.

I got my m20 head from this place which is about 60 miles away in San Antonio and have no problems at all. Funny thing is I had to search the net to find them when they were very close. I first took it to a performance shop in town and they wanted a sick amount of cash for it. The only reason I went with these guys is my head was cracked and they did not need the cores.
