View Full Version : Lowering the rear of the exhaust - help wanted for first timer

This shows the rear exhaust system. When lowering the exhaust I assume I unbolt the brakets (that the exhasut rubber rings hold onto). Item numbers 9, 10 and 13. Then I will use the floor jack to lower whole exhaust. I've removed the flange (item 4 holding the center muffler to the cat).

Is this right?

that pretty much covers it Kriss, you might be able to simply slip the rubber hangers off the clamp in a few areas for convenience.

Keep in mind that parts of the exhaust are way the hell heavier than you probably think they are. :)

It can help a lot to have a jack with a piece of wood on the pad under the part you're dropping to take the weight off the hanger/help with slipping the hanger back on.

Actually, you can just place the jack under the pipes between the resonator and the rear muffler and save the piece of wood (I only use the latter when lifting the rear of the car via the diff). That point on the muffler pipes is VERY handy -- good place to lift given the weight distribution of the exhaust.

I'm just started using photoshack for pics. It makes posting pics a lot easier. Thanks for your comments guys the exhaust is now off. I supported the rear on jackstands with the rear axle carrier. not in the stock jack stand position

I couldn't unscrew the hanger supports that support the rubber. I couldn't get to the bolts. I pulled off the rubber supports (2 in the middle). Two long screwdrivers worked well. I raised the exhaust as much as possible to get as much slack on the rubber supports. The rear exhaust has two hanger (supports). The exhaust is heavy.

Another question about subframe bushings. I know there is no load on the bushings at the moment becasue the car is jacked onto the rear axle carrier, but there is a gap of approximately 2cm between the derlin insert and the bushing. Is this normal?
