Try disconnecting the battery first then unplugging the general module. wait a couple of minutes, plug the general module back in the reconnect the battery. It may reset itself

I don't think any E34 came with that...

Or any time you get in. On the cars before 9/91 the delay for the lights to go off was 20 seconds, on the cars after 9/91 the delay is reduced to 15 seconds. Or if you have put a newer general module in then its 15 seconds.

My '91 535i (9/90) 5sp has always had that cool fade! Love it!!

Well, are they supposed to "fade" out or do they just shut off? Mine shut off on a time delay, which seems normal, but they've never faded out, from what I recall.

...the e38 fades slowly on and off and does it more distinguishably than my 95 e34 which goes off more abruptly. (just tested both out in the garage)

But remember...Tim has a 95 540i which has some features that are in-common with the e38 and e39. For example, the 95 540i uses the same type of key, and has the same keyless entry and anti-theft system as the 95 7 series. So his interior lights probably do fade in and out slower than other e34s. :D

I want mine to fade on. The interior lights are brighter than my freakin fog lights. it burns your eyes when you open the door and everyone complains. I'm sure there's a DIY... i'd be willing to do it!

so to get the fade, a LKM from a '95 E34 or '94 E32 is needed?

If they're all supposed to do it there could be a capcitor or something that needs replacing in the GM - I wonder if it's microcontroller driven or capacitor discharge time driven?

I have a 95 540 and i'm reasonably sure they just go out. No real discernible fade from what I recall.

You guys are right, i checked it at the shop today just because it was bugging me.

I could have sworn it did but I never thought about it because my other cars faded. Hmm

One of shogun's contacts in, IIRC Germany, has developed an add-on unit for the E32 which enables fading, although I haven't seen any mention of it for a while, I'll have a dig around.

Most e34 have the fade-out thing. Mine doesn't. But I 've seen others that all had it. I suspect it's universal but works on a capacitor like someone else suggested here. So maybe we need to find this capacitor and putthis to rest.
