I set about adjusting the steering box today (94 530).

From above:Remove the filter box, removed the washer bottles, loosen earth wire.
From below: removed an airpump? thing from next to the aircon pump.

The steering box on this car had no 17mm adjuster on top under the heatshield, but did have a 10mm locking nut with a allen key grub screw, on the end. Does anyone know what it does??

Don,t want to hassle you V8 owners but has anyone seen this kind of steering box before or know what the end adjuster (mark with red loctite is for)?

Looks just like the steering box adjuster on my Trooper. On that car the manual says to jack the car up to unload the front wheels and losen the jam nut then tighten the "grub screw" until you feel resistance then tigthen the jam nut. And wholla, less slop in the steering.

Personly I was dissapointed (bought my first bimmer a month ago) that my e34 came with a steering box and pitman arm set up. My 39 year old Porsche has Rack and pinion.

Thanks

I started by removing the air filter and housing , washer resovoirs but these in the end these only served to let some light in. With the car on stands I took of some kind of air pump/heater under the front right of the bumper(RHD car), and loosened the earth cable.

This gives clear access for one hand below the car and one hand from above.
Unfortunatley I was short of friends to hold the lock nut from above whilst adjusting from below at 7am this morning, so I ended up taking both parts out and just replacing the lost oil.
I did put half a turn on the grub screw before putting it back, difficult to tell but no drastic improvements. If thats the adjuster then it may be a worn steering pump is the problem.
