I have a beat-up steering wheel and would prefer to swap it out for something nicer.......any suggestions or info on this topic. The airbag MUST function.

If the spline size fits, it will work. Now your 92 535i is a bit tricky since it may be built in 91 and there is a cut off date from when BMW switched from using older 22mm nut to secure the wheel to using 17mm BOLT to secure the wheel. The 95 most definitely uses the bolt as my 95 touring has the same. Is the airbag a 4 spoke unit ?. If so, you might want to try what I did, (but you need some skills in modifying and take some risk), get a E46 4 spoke wheel (without the airbag), your airbag can fit if it is 4 spoke.
I did mine with old airbag. Works well but 3 hours of work to mod it . Its smaller diamter so the steering feel is better. Also outer rim is thicker which is nice.

Can send you picks and writeup if you wanted to attempt this at your own risk!.

it should work fine as long as both wheels are held on with a bolt and not a nut, generally everything after 91 is the bolt style so you should be ok
