Hi :)
My 1993 540i has just started making a ticking / tapping noise from the auto box. It only does it when I slow down. As soon as I put my foot back on the gas it stops. Also only when she's cold. Any ideas? (yes I do have to slow down sometimes!)

Change the fluid and filter first.

Thx Tiger

Just one thing before I try. I was told the auot box was sealed for life type. Does what you said still apply? (132,000 miles)

I got the same car. There is not such thing as lifetime... lifetime means 100,000 miles according to BMW. I drained my tranny at 113,000 miles... man! It is horrible!

The other thing wrong with our tranny is the checkballs that are bound to shrink in size due to wear and tear... that leads to alot of problems for our tranny. A simple valve body overhaul will solve this problem and extend our tranny's life tremendously.

ticking tapping could be the guibo or driveshaft. check that first.

Hi :) I know it has been 4 years since I started this thread but I just came across it again and I found out what the problem was!

I sold the car to my brother(yes I did tell him about gearbox ;) He has a friend that works as a BMW mechanic who took a look at it. The noise was due to the gearbox coming loose and once tightened the noise had gone. He still has the car now and going strong. So if you have the same type of noise from your car it's worth a check.

I have an A8 now but have a E30 325i 1987 track car. We just killed the engine and have decided to swap the M20 for an M50 we have in a 525ix 1993 touring. You can check out the our progress at http://www.youtube.com/ricointheuk If interested :)
