After many months of dithering I finally printed off the simple instructions on Brunos E34 web site www.bmwe34.net under Electrical maintenance and resoldered the joins on the back of my LKM board.
The whole process took about 1/2 hour which included pulling out the LKM and waiting for the soldering iron to warm up. Cost was $0 as I already had a 30W soldering iron and solder.
Cost for a new LKM would have been AUD$400 locally or even US$220 from BMA (including shipping).
